Langtang Valley trek

9 Days

Less well known (and slightly less high) than the Annapurna or the Evere region, you will find the Langtang region. You start your Langtang trek to the Langtang Valley at about 7 hours drive from Kathmandu. The beautiful landscapes and authentic culture, together with heartwarming hospitality in cozy teahouses make this trekking a real must!

This Langtang area was one of the first in Nepal to be protected as a nature park. This also ensured that it is quite unspoiled, even though it is not so far from Kathmandu.

Without days of hiking, you will find yourself on this trekking in the Langtang valley between the high peaks of the Himalayas. The Langtang trek starts at the small town of Syabrubesi. You will hike through various forests to the high green meadows with yaks around Kyanjin Gompa (a famous Buddhist monastery). From this location you will make a walk to the top of the Kyanjin Ri. Here you will enjoy a spectacular 360 degree panoramic view of the Himalayas! Even though there are only peaks up to 7000 meters, the feeling is equally overwhelming and the view is breathtakingly beautiful! Afterwards you follow the route back down and drive back to Kathmandu.

The Langtang valley was badly hit by the earthquake of 2015. Some of the villages were completely wiped out. As a result, there are still fewer visitors than before. However, the locals did everything they could to be able to welcome guests back as soon as possible: the paths have been repaired and the teahouses are operational. Tourism is their main source of income here as well.

Trekking in this beautiful Langtang valley supports the people of Langtang to provide them with a new income!

Itinerary

Namaste and welcome to Nepal!

Today you leave for a road trip to the starting point of your trekking in Syabrubesi.

You drive up over the ridges when you leave the Kathmandu valley. You have a magnificent view of the Annapurna Mountains in the west, but you will also see the Manaslu, the Ganesh Himal and of course the snowy peaks of the Langtang Mountains. Along the way you see beautiful scenes: rivers, slopes full of terraced fields and picturesque villages.

Before you get to Dunche, you drive through the lively town of Trisuli. You continue to Syabrubesi where you will spend the night today.

You spend the night in a teahouse in Syabrubesi.

After breakfast in Syabrubesi you will start your hike over the Bhote Kosi River, which flows down through the Himalayas from nearby Tibet.

First you follow the cobbled main street. After crossing a suspension bridge over the Langtang River you will walk through subtropical forests and then climb the path through oak and rhododendron forests. Be sure to watch out for languishing in the trees, as well as unusual wildlife such as martens and wild boars. If you're lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the rare red panda.

The path to the Lama Hotel is steep at first, but then goes up more slowly until you get to the Lama Hotel.

You spend the night in a teahouse at the Lama Hotel.

Today you start with a climb through a forest: it sometimes looks like a semi-jungle with ferns and orchids growing on the trees. Occasionally the Langtang Lirung peaks between the trees! At Ghora Tablea you leave the forest and can enjoy beautiful snowy mountain peaks on both sides of the valley.

You gently climb further up and the valley widens. You pass some temporary settlements: here the shepherds who let their herds graze on the green alpine meadows in summer. Chances are you'll see yaks here!

Finally, you walk on to the Langtang valley, where the village of Langtang is situated. Tamangs as well as Tibetans live here.

The old village of Langtang was completely wiped off the map by the earthquake of 2015. Meanwhile, the village was rebuilt 100 meters above the ruins of the old one. This new location is safer than the old one. It is still close to cliffs, but vertical cliffs are less sensitive to avalanches.

You spend the night in one of the newly built teahouses and help the locals to recoup their investments of recent years.

After half an hour of walking, you first reach the village of Mundu. From there you gradually climb up through green yak meadows. Remarkable how wide the view is here in the valley, and that in the middle of the mountains!

After crossing several small streams and moraines, you arrive in Kyanjin. In this settlement there is not only a small Tibetan monastery, but also a cheese factory! No better place to eat and drink!

In the afternoon you have time to relax: take a look in the village or explore the neighbourhood. If you still have enough energy, walk to Langshisha Kharka and enjoy a breathtaking view.

You will spend the night in a teahouse in Kyanjin Gompa.

Today is a rest day, so you have time to rest and relax. If you took it easy yesterday, you can visit the monastery or the cheese factory today. If you are completely fit, you can walk on the moraine to enjoy the magnificent view of the ice walls and glaciers of the Langtang Lirung.

If you really want to hike today, go to Kyanjin Ri (4773m), right behind the village. From this point you have a 360-degree panoramic view of the beautiful Langtang Mountains with its snow-capped peaks. You leave quite early for your hike to Kyanjin Ri: the views are the clearest in the morning.

Another more strenuous alternative is climbing to Tsergo Ri (4884m). From here you have a spectacular view of the Langtang Lirung, the Langtang Mountains, Kinshung, Yansa Tsenji and the foot of the great Lirung Glacier. After lunch you can go for a walk in the Kyanjin valley.

You will spend the night in a teahouse in Kyanjin Gompa.

After breakfast you start walking. You follow the path you traveled before: through the valley you first follow the Langtang Khola river to Mundu, Langtang and then Ghora Tablea.

You go faster than when climbing and even though the path is the same, the views are different. Take your time today to enjoy lush green forests and the view of the snowy peaks of Langtang.

You'll have lunch on the way and follow the path further downhill until you reach Lama Hotel again. This protected area is one of the most pristine valleys in Nepal.

You will spend the night in a teahouse at Lama Hotel.

After breakfast you walk through a bamboo & rhododendron forest. If you are lucky you can see wild boar, monkeys and other wild animals in these woods. You will also hear and see a variety of birds.

Along the way you will also enjoy a beautiful view of the Ganesh Himal and other mountains. After an easy descent along the banks of the river, you ascend another steep stretch to the village of Thulo Syabru.

You spend the night in a teahouse in Thulo Syabru.

Today is your last hiking day, where you hike to the end point in Dhunche.

You walk from the village of Syabru past villages, through fields and over a ridge, slowly descending. From the village Brabel you have a beautiful view on the Ganesh Himal.

You walk further and there is a steep descent along a stream and the mountainside, starting from the village of Braccaka. At the end of the descent you cross a suspension bridge.

The trekking ends by climbing up in the forest, away from the Trisuli river. Did you know that the water from this river comes from the sacred lake of Gosainkund? You climb until you reach Dhunche.

Spend the night in a teahouse in Dhunche.

Your journey is coming to an end! After a nice farewell evening at the lodge with your porter and guide, you leave today back to Kathmandu. This adventurous ride takes about 7 hours.

Depending on your arrival time in Kathmandu, you may have free time to go out.

If you would like to avoid the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu, pay a visit to Swayambunath, the monkey temple. This Buddhist complex is located on a hill on the outskirts of town. From here you have a beautiful view of Kathmandu.

At the rear of this domain is Amideva Buddha Park, where there are 3 beautiful large gilded Buddha statues.
