This short Sherpa Culture trek along the Everest Trail is an ideal way to get to know the life of the Sherpa people. First, you will explore the valleys of the Everest region. You will have a view of some of the highest peaks in the world. In addition, you will enjoy the hospitality of the Sherpa people in the typical villages.

The originally Tibetan Sherpas are an ethnic group that live in different regions of the Nepalese Himalayas. You will find many Sherpas in Solu Khumbu (along the Everest trail). Their culture, language and traditions are strongly influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. Sherpas follow the Nyingmapa sect of Buddhism, founded by Guru Rinpoche.

The Sherpas have an ancient tradition of hospitality: they believe that guests can be a disguise of Guru Rinpoche. Most Sherpas work in tourism, but they are also traders, shepherds and farmers. Sherpas are known for their exceptional climbing qualities.

One of the most famous Sherpas is undoubtedly Tenzing Norgay. In 1953, together with Edmund Hillary, he was the first to climb the summit of Mount Everest!

Day 1 :

Early morning drive to Manthali, Domestic flight to Lukla & Trek to Phakding (2652m) - ca. 4 hours

Namaste and welcome to Nepal. Today starts early. In the early morning you and your guide will go to the airport of Manthali (Ramechhap) for the flight to Lukla (2853m). Lukla is the gateway to the Khumbu region and the starting point of your trek! This flight will give you a foretaste of the beauty of the Himalayas and you will catch your first glimpse of Mount Everest in the distance. In Lukla you will meet your porter and depart towards Phakding (2600m). This village is located along the main route in this area and houses some nice lodges where you will spend the night. You spend the night in a teahouse in Phakding.

Day 2 :

Trek to Namche Bazaar (3440m) - ca. 4 to 5 hours

You walk further upstream along the banks of the Dudh Kosi River where we cross the river twice via a suspension bridge until you reach the village of Monjo. This is where the Sagarmatha National Park starts. Again you cross a high suspension bridge, this time at the confluence of the Dudh Khosi and the Bhote Khosi. You climb uphill to Namche Bazaar. Namche is the capital of the region and a busy market place where Tibetans sell their merchandise. From Namche you also have a view on some high peaks. You spend the night in a teahouse in Namche.

Day 3 :

Extra day in Namche (acclimatisation)

You climbed 640 meters yesterday. To acclimatize to the altitude, with a lower amount of oxygen, you stay a day longer in Namche today. You can walk to the Museum Viewpoint. From this viewpoint you can see Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Taboche, etc. in all their grandeur. In Namche you can visit the Sherpa museum where you can learn about the locals and the surrounding area. Take a free afternoon and enjoy a pastry in one of the bakeries or play a game of pool. Today you will let your body get used to the altitude. Be sure to drink enough water, at least 4 liters per 1000 meters. You will spend the night in a teahouse in Namche.

Day 4 :

Trek to Khumjung (3790m) - ca. 4 hours

You get up early and if there are no clouds in the morning you have a beautiful view of the Kongde Ri towering above Namche Bazaar. After breakfast you start your hike to Khumjung via Syangboche and the old airport. Along the way you have a beautiful view over Lhotse, Ama Dablam and Thamserku. If there are no clouds, you can also see Mount Everest and in the afternoon you will visit the Khumjung monastery. Inside is a large statue of the Guru Rinpoche. This monastery also has a skull which according to them comes from a Yeti. You can also visit the school founded by Sir Edmund Hillary. Another Sherpa village you visit today is Khundu. You walk slightly uphill to Khunde through potato fields. There you can visit the Khunde Hospital and the Khunde Monastery. The view from above on Khunde and Khumjung is great. You spend the night in a teahouse in Khumjung.

Day 5 :

Trek to Tengboche (3867m) - ca. 7 hours

The path descends to the Dudh Khosi River. You will enjoy spectacular views of the Ama Dablam (6696m), the Kantega (6779m), Mount Everest (8848m) and the Lhotse (8501m). You cross the river at Phunki Thanga and in the afternoon you climb through the rhododendron forest to the top of the hill. Suddenly Tengboche is in front of us, where the most important monastery of the Khumbu area is located. Be sure to visit this monastery. What a beautiful view you have here! You spend the night in a teahouse in Tengboche.

Day 6 :

Trek to Namche (3440m) - ca. 5 to 6 hours

From Tengboche you go down to the valley again. After lunch, you cross another suspension bridge and ascend again in style along the other side of the river passing some small villages. Finally you walk further along the side of the mountain and finally you arrive back at the familiar Namche bazaar. You spend the night in a teahouse in Namche.

Day 7 :

Trek to Monjo (2835m) - ca. 3 to 4 hours

You walk from Namche Bazaar back to Lukla. You descend and cross the high suspension bridge. You walk along the river before crossing a few more suspension bridges and you arrive in Monjo, where you will spend the night today. Monjo is a small village in the Khumbu region in Nepal. It is situated in the valley of the Dudh Khosi River, north of Phakding and south of Jorsale. You spend the night in a teahouse in Monjo.

Day 8 :

Trek to Lukla (2840m) - ca. 4 hours

Today is your last day in the mountains! After half an hour you pass Phakding where you spent the night. Even though you return on your footsteps, you see the Khumbu valley completely different at the descent. From Phakding you'll walk for another 3 to 4 hours or so and you'll be back in Lukla. Flying is only possible early in the morning, so you will sleep in Lukla today. You will spend the night in a teahouse in Lukla.

Day 9 :

Flight to Kathmandu - Last day

Unfortunately, the end of your journey has come. Early in the morning you go back to Manthali (Ramechhap) with a small propeller plane from Lukla. This flight takes about 25 minutes. On the way you will enjoy a breathtaking view of the snowy peaks of the Himalayas one last time. A minibus will take you from Manthali (Ramechhap) to Kathmandu. The rest of the day is free to spend in Kathmandu. If you want to enjoy the peace and quiet a bit further, you can take a look at the Garden of Dreams, a green oasis in the heart of Kathmandu.
